Root Canals

A root canal, or endodontic therapy, is a procedure that saves a damaged or infected tooth, serving as an alternative to extraction. Signs you may need a root canal include tooth or gum pain, swelling, abscess or infection, sensitivity to hot or cold, fever, bad breath or unusual taste.

Causes of Infection

Infections can result from large cavities, decay, oral lesions, or untreated tooth pain.

The Root Canal Process

1. Preparation
Your dentist will take x-rays to assess the tooth and surrounding area. If a root canal is necessary, a local anesthetic will be applied to ensure comfort.

2. Cleaning the Tooth
A small opening is made in the tooth to remove the infection. The canals are thoroughly cleaned and filled with a material called gutta-percha. A temporary filling may be placed if needed.

3. Crown Placement
After a healing period, a custom crown is placed to seal the tooth, preventing food and bacteria from entering. This step completes the treatment.
